NewScientist reports on Prius with noise-machine.

I’m not sure if my sarcasm gene is on overdrive today or what, but this seems to me like biggest bit of non-news that NewScientist’s video channel has produced.

“Fake engine noise makes electric cars safer”

The main point seems to be to protect blind people and the terminally stupid (or i-Pod wearing) from being hit by quiet hybrid cars as they cross the street.

See how Mad Mike would solve the problem after the jump:

Magic Pen – A Phun Game for wasting valuable study time

Thanks to Danny Nicholson at the WhiteboardBlog.Magic Pen - poof! your time has disappeared.

Similar to the Phun application I mentioned a while back, here’s a simpler game-style version. It’s in Flash and can be saved with the Firefox app, so it can be played on the whiteboard later.

What are you doing working?

Go over there and waste some time! (Joking)

It’s all over! Good luck with the results…

Last night recorded a record number of hits for this blog – and nearly all the search terms were for the Further Human Physiology topics, so I hope the paper went well for you all today. I know my class left the room feeling OK, so fingers crossed for July!

Unwind for an evening with some Science comedy:

Graphjam and Graphical Silliness

Here’s a response to silly graphs on TV news shows (is it Brasseye?)

The Graphjam blog has loads of funny (and not so funny) pop-culture referencing graphs…

… as does the Facebook group “You’re having a graph

Idea: have a stupid graph-making challenge – middle school link with Maths?

Here is Brasseye with Heavy Electricity:

YouTube Blocked – disaster (averted)

Aduh, YouTube has been blocked by the Indonesian government because of a dispute over the movie Fitna. I haven’t seen it, though it apparently paints a pretty negative picture of Islam.

This is going to slow things down on the blog, but I’ll keep trying to find useful non-YouTube sources that will help with Science topics.

Hopefully they’ll see sense soon and lift the ban.

Luckily, the ever-growing TeacherTube is still going strong.

UPDATE – it’s back on again – I wonder whey they changed their minds?

Let’s celebrate with a recent item from Newsnight:

Thanks to Badscience for the heads up.

Flying Penguins

Here’s the BBC’s April Fools joke:

Barenaked Ladies – History of Everything

Thanks to HezWad from the TES Boards for this one:

Go over to the original post at YouTube for the lyrics.

The Simpsons’ take on evolution is after the jump, thanks to cb23.

Fizzix is Phun

I’m a bit worried about posting this so close to the DP exams*, but it is irresistable…

Ben Goldacre posted this video on the badscience blog – it’s a Physics toy for the computer, which can be downloaded here: phun.at.

The comments page turned up a load of other good toys to play with, so go on over to the original post and check them out.

There are plenty of videos of Phun in action on YouTube.

Funny Wind-turbine video

This is what happens when a wind turbine’s brakes fail…

Thanks to badscience.net for posting it.

“What’s the prognosis, Fertile Myrtle?”

That ain’t no etch-a-sketch. This is one diddle that can’t be undid, Homeskillet.

Probably the most realistic, sensitive and enjoyable movie about a teenage pregnancy ever made.

Juno: Nominated for Best Picture (probaby not worthy of that) and best Actress (yeah, she could win):
