The Why’s Guy – a great resource of Chemistry and Physics clips
This one’s been a team effort, so thanks. Specko from the TES Boards pointed me in the direction of this site, which is an archive of clips from a show called the Morning Show in the States. Each week, Mats Selens does an experiment or two and explains what’s going on. Nice, short, simple, well-explained – just the way we like it. I contacted Mats (the one with the beard) and he gave me permission to put a clip on this blog, so please go and investigate his site. For each episode, you can download a .wmv file which is of much better quality than these YouTube compressions.
In these two sample clips, Mats is explaining electrolysis of water and discussing the use of fuel cells and hydrogen as a power source.
Part two after the jump.
2000 Views and a Brainiac post
Thanks for the support so far – this blog’s only been going six weeks and it feels like it’s coming along nicely.
Love ’em or loathe ’em, Brainiac is a decent way to engage the telly-addicted, so I thought I’d put up one of their clips. Here is the Brainiac way of doing the thermite reaction:
Arkive.org – a whopping great video archive
This site is a great resource for short clips of hundreds of different species in the wild. Thanks to Philips78 from the TES Boards for the link. They are streamed videos – WMV, RealVideo or Qucktime – and you can download each one via a button below the video. Go and have a look – you could spend hours and all your bandwidth, so get comfortable.
Mybusters: Diet Coke and Mentos
I like Mythbusters – especially when some helpful soul cuts the experiments together into single clips, rather than having to flick through a whole episode. Thanks to dannynic from the TES Boards for this link.
I’ll get some more Mythbusters and Brainiac clips up soon – snowed under with student-led conferences at the moment.
Royal Society Predictions for 2007: What are we really talking about?
At the end of 2006, at a Royal Society shindig, the Telegraph asked a range of RS members to predict what we’d be talking about in 2007. Dark matter, cancer, engaging young people, the brain, bioinformatics, water flowing down craters on Mars… Interesting viewing – a nice short clip.
Dawkins vs Homeopathy: The Memory of Water
This is a useful clip form the ‘Enemies of Reason’ series by Richard Dawkins. I know I’ve posted the whole episodes before, but some useful scientist has edited out the section explaining how homeopathy works. Very useful for the TOK statement regarding pseudoscience in the new DP Bio guide (Chemical Elements and Water).
Eurostemcell.org – Stem Cell Stories
These video resources from eurostemcell.org are well worth investing in – and since I bought the first video last year, there have been three more produced. Three are now available to view online. Great quality, short and suitable.
Edit: 2011 They can now be viewed online through their website and YouTube!
